Connecting the Dots - The Link Between Oral and Vision Health to Overall Well-Being

When you think of promoting your employees’ wellness, what comes to mind? Pedometers for walking programs. Healthy snacks in the breakroom. Online meditation courses. And toothbrushes? While employers strive to better understand and improve their employees’ health, many are missing an important part their employees’ health story- oral and vision health.

Oral and vision well-being is often described as the window to a person’s overall health. The eyes, mouth, teeth and gums can offer clues to other conditions and ailments in the body. And maintaining good oral and vision health can prevent tooth decay and loss, vision impairments, and help deter more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

During this one-hour Master Class webinar, Lisa Knowles, DDS, dental director, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Paul Kimbro, OD, Henry Ford Health System, will discuss the importance of oral and vision health and its connection to overall well-being. They’ll also address the fallout of COVID-19 that has included lapses of dental and vision care. This session will help employers understand the need and full value of specialty benefits, focusing on dental and vision coverage as part of their organization’s health plan. Attendees will also receive tools and resources to help encourage and implement better oral and vision health in the workplace.

Why Behavioral Health Matters - A Look at Integrative Care

Depression. Anxiety. Addiction. Mental health. Co-morbidities. What does it all mean? What is behavioral health and why does it matter to you, your business and your employees?

Behavioral health includes a spectrum of mental and emotional issues or disorders. And the link between behavioral health and physical health is an important one. Someone who suffers from one or more chronic diseases is likely to be depressed. Depression — or any other behavioral health issue — can negatively affect physical health. What’s more, medical costs increase significantly when a person has a chronic condition, such as diabetes or heart disease, in conjunction with a behavioral health issue. Health plan data indicates that an individual with both a behavioral health disorder, such as depression, and a chronic condition can result in double the cost of treatment and care than someone without a behavioral health disorder.

During this one-hour Master Class webinar, William Beecroft, MD, and Jonathan Henry, MD, will share their expertise on behavioral health, discuss how behavioral and physical health are related and how integrating both modalities of care can be more effective for individuals. HR professionals will gain a better understanding of the toll behavioral health issues can have on their business and what tools they can use to help their employees who may be suffering with behavioral health issues.

A Closer Look at Coordinated Care

    Recorded March 25, 2021

Your employees face an increasingly fragmented and complex health care system. It’s often up to your employees to manage all the different facets of their care on their own. They may see a primary care physician and a couple of specialists, but those providers may not be communicating with each other. Or, when they go to the hospital, their primary care physician may not be notified.

The system is such that a lot of the coordination and communication falls on your employee themselves, which can cause confusion, stress and lack of care. This ultimately can result in gaps of care that ultimately lead to more health care expenses, impacting you employees and your bottom-line. This is compounded by challenging social determinants of health - conditions where people work, live, learn and play that contribute to their health and well-being.
With proper care management and care coordination program, the burden of navigating the health system now becomes a partnership with your employee and their insurer, resulting in higher plan satisfaction and decreased health care spend.

During this one-hour, Master Class webinar, we’ll dive into how coordinated care works, how coordination can decrease your health care expenditure, and enhancements to coordinated care that expand this type of service to service to all your employees. Leading our discussion is Ann Marie Baker, MPH, RD, vice president of Care Management and Michael Kobernick, MD, medical director, Clinical Consulting, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
